Job Description

Accountable to   Service Manager

Responsible for: Clinical Management and Leadership of the Counselling Team

Hours of Work:  12 Hours per week[8 hours at the Chesterfield Hub, 4 hours work at home]

Place of work: Relate Chesterfield and North Derbyshire, 3rd Floor, 81 New Square, Dents Chambers, Chesterfield, S40 1AH

Salary: £27 per hour

Role

  • To hold operational responsibility for the clinical management of our counselling services.
  • To manage and support a team of counsellors (currently 11 part-time)
  • To deliver high quality, safe and effective services.
  • To be the designated safeguarding lead.
  • To work with the Service Manager to develop and promote our services.
  • Ideally, also carry a client caseload.
  • Hours are flexible depending upon the needs of the service.

Background

Chesterfield Relate is a small centre employing 11 counsellors, 2 administration workers, a Training and Quality Manager, and a Service Manager who has overall responsibility.   Currently there are 5 supervisors, covering individual counselling specialities. The supervisors provide an excellent service remotely, but counsellors and Management acknowledge that ideally a supervisor should be accessible, centre based, and be integrated into the organisational management of the service.

Clinical Responsibilities

Ensure:

  • All counsellors are competent and confident in their role
  • Staff maintain appropriate and accurate case records and are familiar with their responsibilities regarding confidentiality, data protection, DBS and mandatory CPD and Relate Counsellor registration is up to date.
  • Counsellors are inquisitive, and that their clients and close contacts are safe.
  • Referrals are dealt with in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Counsellors deal with and follow through on safeguarding concerns.
  • Concerns and service management are discussed with the Operational Service Manager.

Service Sustainability and Development

  • Ensure that counsellor appointments are kept and regular in accordance with BACP requirements
  • Ensure that all new clients and AI’s are booked in and service appointments filled.
  • Liaise with the Service manager to update on service development requirements
  • Support the Service Manager in funding applications and contract acquisition and delivery.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  • Daily use of IT, such as Penelope, Jasper and Tableau, Teams, Outlook and other Office products and web-based systems.
  • Be aware of current and developing legislation and best practice in counselling and therapeutic field.
  • Attend meetings, reviews, supervision and other related meetings as required.
  • Work flexibly as a member of the team and be responsive to changing needs.
  • Understand and work within the policies and procedures of Relate Chesterfield.
  • Undertake training and other duties required to meet the objectives of the post
  • Respond to unforeseen demands of the role.

Person Specification

Core qualifications and experience are essential. However, whilst all the remaining criteria are desirable, not all are necessarily essential e.g. experience of funding bids, experience of Relate software systems.

Qualifications and Training

Qualified Counsellor accredited with BACP, UKCP or equivalent professional body.

  • 450 hours post qualification experience including couples, families, young people, individuals, psychosexual therapy.
  • Qualified and experienced supervisor
  • Meets the criteria for the Relate Register [see table below]

Experience and knowledge

  • Experience of providing effective clinical leadership and line management to a team of practitioners, including providing clinical support, reviewing performance and developing the team.
    • Relevant experience in supporting clinical delivery to achieve service plans and targets.
    • Extensive experience of safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.
    • Evidence of sound clinical decision making, independently or part of a team.
    • Experience of report writing including analysis of outputs, outcomes and gaps.
    • Experience of working to quality frameworks, monitoring, evaluating and measuring impact.
    • Proven ability to facilitate 1-1 therapeutic work with clients.
    • Good working knowledge of ethical, legal and professional issues in counselling.
    • Knowledge and understanding of a wide range of therapeutic approaches to counselling.
    • Good knowledge of relationship issues, emotional wellbeing and common mental health concerns and how they present.
    • Experience of supporting project work, funding bids, tenders and other income generation.

    • Good project and time management skills.
    • Be able to lead by example and supervise and motivate others.
    • Ability to manage professional boundaries and work in an organisational structure.

    • Ability to communicate clearly and sensitively in difficult and complex situations.
    • Flexible in your approach to working hours and willing to travel.
    • Commercially aware, and able to support budget and service development decisions
    • Excellent admin skills and IT proficient, able to use Relate systems, Teams/Zoom.
    • Have experience working with confidential and complex information and adhering to GDPR requirements.
